CAASPP: CAA Test Examiner Tutorial Is Available Now in Moodle
Email Update, August 4, 2025
Dear California Educator:
The 2025–26 California Alternate Assessment (CAA) Test Examiner Tutorial is now available on the Moodle Training Site (Moodle).
The Test Examiner Tutorial covers general information and highlights best practices for the administration of the CAA for Science and the CAAs for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics. The tutorial does not contain any secure content and it must be completed before administering the CAAs.
Accessing Moodle
A Moodle user account is necessary to access the tutorial. User accounts can be created through the Moodle logon web page. Your local educational agency (LEA) California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) coordinator should contact you with information about how accounts will be set up for your LEA.
As a test examiner, you will access the tutorial using the Moodle enrollment key provided by your LEA CAASPP coordinator.
Completion Requirements
The CAA Test Examiner Tutorial contains three sections—General Requirements, CAA for Science, and CAAs for ELA and Mathematics. All test examiners must complete the General Requirements section of the tutorial and at least one subject area section to receive a certificate of completion. To complete each section, answer all of the “Check for Understanding” questions correctly.
Test examiners will receive the CAA for Science Certificate of Completion upon completion of both the General Requirements and the CAA for Science sections, and the CAAs for ELA and Mathematics Certificate of Completion upon completing both the General Requirements and the CAAs for ELA and Mathematics sections.
Form Assignments
Form assignments are available on the following web pages, which are searchable by county, LEA, school, or county/district/school code:
Form assignments for the CAA for Science and for CAAs for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics are the same.
CAA for Science Planning Guides
The CAA for Science consists of three embedded performance tasks (PTs) that should be administered one at a time in any order, beginning September 16, 2025, through the end of the school year or June 30, 2026, whichever comes first. Administration of an embedded PT should occur immediately after instruction on the related science content. The CAA for Science Administration Planning Guides are available to help with early planning and scheduling of the embedded PTs.
Second Scoring for the CAA for ELA
Second scoring is the process of having another individual score the same student’s rubric-scored items simultaneously, yet independently, from the student’s test examiner. The purpose of second scoring is to establish and document standardized scoring procedures and evaluate the validity of the rubric-scored items.
For the CAA for ELA test administration, some LEAs and schools assigned to Form 2 for grades six through eight and grade eleven will be required to participate in second scoring for test validity purposes. Second scoring assignments can be found through the Search for Second Scoring Assignments tool on the CAA for ELA Second Scoring web page.
A second scorer should be someone who works regularly with the student and is familiar with the student's mode of communication. All individuals assigned to second score must complete the General Requirements section and the CAAs for ELA and Mathematics section of the Test Examiner Tutorial.
Test examiners who have questions about the administration of the CAAs should address them to the site CAASPP coordinator.
